O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. She made it into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performance since then, always finished in the three top performers. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
